Jeffrey Hunter
Born Henry McKinnies Jr in New Orleans, Louisiana, Jeffrey Hunter (1926-1969) was a strikingly handsome and talented actor who, after a stint in the Navy during WWII, began on stage and was signed to 20th Century Fox, beginning in bit parts and gradually groomed into one of the studio’s heartthrobs of the 1950s, along with his frequent costar, Robert Wagner. The latter often got the bigger part in the movies in which they appeared together and seemed to get many more leading roles at Fox, but Hunter proved he was much more than a pretty face in such films as “The Searchers” (1956), “Count To Five And Die” (1957), “The Last Hurrah” (1958), and “King Of Kings” (1961), in which he received great praise in his sensitive portrayal of Christ. Despite his extraoridnary good looks and talent, Hunter never forgot where he came from and remained a gentle, down-to-earth individual who did not succumb to the trappings of fame. After leaving Fox, he freelanced in Europe, playing in films that did not always receive wide distribution, and he appeared in the little-seen until recent years “Star Trek” pilot “The Cage” as Captain Christopher Pike which has given him a cult following. Not long after completing “Viva America” (1969), Hunter suffered signs of stroke and later accidently fell at home, leading to a head injury, was taken to the hospital, and died after surgery. Three times married, first to actress Barbara Rush, he had three sons, and adopted his second wife’s son from a prior marriage. Despite his tragically early death, Hunter remains an unforgettable presence, not only in films but in the hearts of those who knew him and loved him. So it is to this beautiful man, on the inside and the outside, that this tribute video is dedicated. The song is ” ‘Til ” by The Angels. Enjoy!
