Yes, you will need to buy cd keys. If you want to all you have to do is use his cds and download it onto your computer and then let it be patched. You're going to need to create your account (20 dollars) and buy your keys online for the games. You can't avoid buying things. The CDs dont mean anything, as the content on them is freely downloadable, it just makes it easier for you to reinstall. There isn't a way around this, you will have to pay $20 for Vanilla; and then later on $20 for BC, and $30 or so for WoTLK, including the monthly fee as you play. But you dont have to buy it all at once, play 1-60, then buy BC, play 60-70, then buy WOTLK. Assuming you play like 3-4 hours a day, it'll take you 3 months or so to get to 80. Also, you can get free time by referring people to the game, and if they sign up you get a month free. Otherwise, there's no way of minimizing it.
