What are the world of warcraft expansions what do they do?
I got my son World Of Warcraft its a battle chest? but it has 2 games world of warcraft and an expansion called the burning crusaide. and he said he wants to get the lich king expansion also.. what do these expansions do? and are they different games or does it jsut add stuff to the original game like new places to go and stuff?
Ok, World of warcraft itself allows your son to level up to 60 and explore a somewhat good amount of area. The Burning Crusade is an expansion set which allows him to go up to level 70 and explore and do even more stuff. For the Lich King it would enable him to level up to 80 thus giving him more places to go like the other one. FIrst, ask him if he has reached level 68(he will know what that means) if he hasn’t i would suggest waiting until he does to but the Wrath of the Lich King. Whatever you do, I’m sure your son will be enjoying his new game.

The expansions for wow unlock new areas, classes, and races of characters. without any expansion your son would only be able to go to lvl 60 but with burning crusade he would be able to go to lvl 70.with the lich king he would be able to have death knights and can go to lvl 80. in burning crusade it unlocks the alliances dranie and the hordes blood elves.

You're correct, expansions add on to the original game and add new content, they aren't separate games. And the Wrath of the Lich King is the newest expansion for World of Warcraft (it and the Burning Crusade are the game's only two expansions so far).
Also… don't let your son get addicted to World of Warcraft. It's a great game, but can be very addictive. I played it for two years, and it was probably fair to say I was addicted for a while, and now that I've quit playing it I really think I'm a lot better off.

There are two expansions for world of warcraft, burning crusade and wrath of the lich king. While the game is playable with only the original game, with these game add-ons, it gives the player alot more to do. You can still play it if you dont have them, but you will be left out of playing with most of the people who play the game and own the expansions.

World of Warcraft's expansion packs are not the same like other PC Games; their expansion packs does just a major patch to the game.
These additional content are usually free and are updated and added into World of Warcraft (whether you have the expansion pack or not). The only thing is, you cannot enter or use these additional contents unless you buy the expansion pack itself and get the code from it and upgrade your account.
This is Blizzard's way of making money, live with it.

The expansions for the game raises the level cap that you can reach and the armor that you can obtain in the game.
The Burning Crusade added two extra character races, Dranaei and Blood Elves. It also raised the level cap from 60 to 70. It also grants access to Outland a new area in the game.
Wrath of Lich King added a new hero class called the Death Knight. It also raised the level cap from 70 to 80. It also grants access to Northrend, which is the latest area in the game.
The expansions for World of Warcraft basically expand the game further. It adds to the storyline and what you can do within the realm of the game.

World of Warcraft is an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). In plain English, they require a PC, a broadband connection and an active subscription to play.
In these kind of games, the player find himself in fantasy environments full of characters which are controlled by other players. This is a fact that may make the game experience vary greatly, because of the unpredictable behaviour of other players. Note that the game is suitable for ages of 12 and above.
Both The Burning Crusade and The Wrath of the Lich King are expansions to the original World of Warcraft. This means thay add new stuff, like new worlds to explore and lots of other features, but they are not playable if you don't have the original World of Warcraft installed. In order to play Wrath of the Lich King, you must have both World of Warcraft and the Burning Crusade installed.

Yes you presumed right! The Burning Crusade allows you to play to Level 70 and play as Draenei and the Blood Elves. In Wrath of the Lich King, a new class comes out! The Death Knight! And you get to level up to 80! Blizzard makes money this way and they are working on a final expansion to wrap up the leveling (90) and give you one more profession and a class. Hopefully they might find a new race to throw at us! But if your son wants it, no arguing in that! The game is a HUGE world full of fun quests and deadly creatures! So let your son enjoy!

I know people who know about Blizzard's working ons.
And ive got the game (private server)
The expansion packs are basically additions to the original game. They allow players to level their characters to higher levels, explore different lands, try new dungeons and raids, etc.
With the original game, the maximum level that could be reached is 60.
WIth the Burning Crusade expansion pack, the maximum level was raised to 70. And with Wrath of the Lich King, the maximum level is 80.
Its technically the same game…but there is new content, new skills to learn, different fights, new items.
With Wrath of the Lich King, a lot of new things have been added like the achievement system (which can still be obtained with the original game through patches that need to be downloaded by every player).
If you're not going to get the expansion packs, it won't be as fun playing because leveling a character to the maximum level doesnt take long and a lot of the fun comes from end game raiding.

Expansions are like add ons if you get Burning Crusade you get to choose 2 more races and you can go to more places an you can get to lvl 70 instead of stopping at 60 if you get lich king it unlocks a new class and you can go to more places and you can get to lvl 80

Expansions expand the original game

It's a box containing the first model of the game released, and its first expansion. You download the first game, then the expansion. After that, if you'd like to play in Northrend, you have to go buy Wrath. They're all essentially the same game, with each expansion adding more places, quests, classes, dungeons etc.
By the way, this game will cause whoever plays it to waste ungodly amounts of time. I myself played it for 2 years before I realized "What the hell? I've done this all before, why am I still sitting here slapping the keyboard?"
I would advise you to throw the game away the second you get the chance.

The expansions are basically just newer versions or updates to the game. The Burning Crusade added two new playable races and the Lich King added the Death Knights( Which you can only get at when you get another character to level 55, but your death knight starts at level 55 as well). They also added two new islands and now allow you to get up to level 80. There are alot of other little things that they added as well

simply, they give u access to new area in the game, higher lvl capability, new armor/weapons,new moves to obtain, new things to do,but dont let ur son have all the fun,i know many people that r adults who play it too,i know poeple who plays it and keeps a balance with reality,so if u do play it,dont let u or ur son(plus any1 else who decides to play)get carried away,i would advise that u only pay for a short amount, stop for a while(month or two, maybe less)then start playing again for a while,or just play ongoing with time off of it

the brown box, world of warcraft, is the actually game itself. You dont NEED the burning crusade to make it function bcuz burning crusade is the expansion pack. The expansion packs (both Burning crusade and lich king) are 2 other CD's that let u do more and travel more places in WoW. You can also create 2 more additional races and have a additional special class only available in The lich king version. The game will get pretty boring without the lich king because nobody really dont anything interesting in the BC version anymore.

Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King are expansions of World of Warcraft (I usually call it WoW basic). The others have already said it, they expand the "world" that you can access but they don't expand what you can see. For example, you can access or make a Death Knight when if you have Wrath of the Lich King expansion but even if you don't have WotLK and have only WoW basic, you can still "see" a Death Knight when one comes into your zone. Some things will always be out of reach when you only have WoW basic because to get them you will have to enter zones available only to the players who have the expansions needed.
Since your son is just a beginner, he only needs basic and, optionally, Burning Crusade to start with. He will only need Wrath of the Lich King when he has a character of level 55 or higher (one of the requirements to open Death Knight class) or at level 70 for any normal class.

Since you have the Battle Chest, install in this order:
1> World of Warcraft (basic, this is the blue CD/DVD). Do not press play or run or anything when it finishes installing. Just close the window.
2> Burning Crusade expansion (this is the green CD/DVD). Since this is the last expansion you have, you can press "Play" or run at this time. If you have a Wrath of the Lich King CD/DVD, don't press play but install that CD/DVD too, then press "Play".
3> Wait. I had to install WoW into a computer recently, using my Battle Chest DVDs, and I had to wait for 1 whole day before it finished patching. Heaven help you if you're using Vista. Remember to use Admin mode and turn off UAC when you're at this and only this patching stage. Read the manuals in the meantime.
4> Make an account. Get one of your guest pass cards and go to http://www.worldofwarcraft.com and click the "Create Account" link. You can use that guest pass card or just use the 10-day free trial account. Enter the account key on the guest pass or 10-day free trial account to open the account. When the trial period is over, use the account key written on the sleeves of the CD/DVD that came in the box. Use the blue one first (basic) then the green one (Burning Crusade). You get a free 30 day subscription with the basic key but none with the green one. These are what you pay for when you bought the box set, the account keys. The installer is free and can be downloaded for free from http://www.worldofwarcraft.com .
5> Pay US$15 per month subscription via credit card after the 30-day "free" period is over. Other payment options or cycles are available, even prepaid cards.
