The other main bonus to buying retail is that you can buy the Battle Chest, which includes the original game + Burning Crusade expansion for $35 or so vs $50 ($20 for WoW and $30 for Bunrning Crusade) if buying the keys separately. The client itself, though, is free to download; they even provide a link to it in account management. It just takes a while to download vs. having the files on a CD to install.
