Both, Tolkiens works and Warcraft seres, were inspired by Norse Mythology. That’s why both seems very similar to ther. But yes, LotR, MAYbe have some influence on Warcraft. But in this point of view, warcraft has influence of every epic theme known by man.

Blizz isn’t stealing stuff from LoTR – if they wanted to they wouldn’t be so obvious – they are paying tribute to it for the great trilogy of books/movies they are. And if you look good – WoW is full of references like that – The Legend of Zelda and Mario from Nintendo franchises for one, or the “Sewer Shark” called Segacedi in Dalaran Sewers (”Sewer Shark” is a game on a gaming console called Sega CD) and many more. So shut up about that matter already, and yes, Icecrown IS based on Mordor.

And I’d like to remind you we haven’t seen the actual Icecrown till WotLK was released. The similarities are obvious (the climate, the gates, building structure, there are even sauron-like eyes (except they are blue) used for the same purpose – spotting every enemy movement within Mordor/Icecrown) and more. And what about the humans’ joke when you type in /silly? The one about “having an idea for a great movie about 2 gnomes that find bracelet of power”… etc. etc. I think everybody knows it.
