is there any way to get them free? like downloads?
Yeah you do need the expansion packs to play the new content.
You can play the old warcraft without them but you wont have access to the expansion areas without them.
I believe you can purchase them online and do a direct download…check the warcraft site.

You can dowload them all you want from the website, but if your account isn't set up to play them, then you won't be able to use their features. In order to play WotLK, you need to have World of Warcraft, and BC.

yes you do need to have burning crusades to play wrath of the linch king because the 1st expansion has more content and raises the level cap of your character to 70 and WotLK raises it to 80.
